Fake letter saying your social security number is suspended

The Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General issued a fraud alert in March about bogus letters being mailed claiming that your Social Security number has been suspended. Scammers send fake letters that closely resemble the official Social Security Administration (SSA) or Inspector General’s Office (OIG) SSA offices, or other government agency letterhead such as the Federal Trade Commission. The Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General issued a fraud alert in March about bogus letters being mailed claiming that your Social Security number has been blocked.

“Were you surprised to receive that letter from Social Security? You should take another look. And another. Other government agencies such as Federal Trade Commission‘ said the March 8 warning.

The inspector general also said it had received reports of fake letters being sent as email and text message attachments.

“These scammers want to steal your money and your identity,” the OIG statement said.

Fake Social Security Letter Warning Signs

Before you freak out and call the fake phone number mentioned in the message, be aware of some big warning signs of this scam.

  • The date in the letter is in European date format (date first, then month, then year).
  • Also, the message is not addressed to anyone by name.
  • The biggest lie of all can’t stop your social security number.

Any phone call, text, or email claiming to be from the Social Security Administration is a scam.
