Vigil Offers Comfort to Family of Girard Man Kevin Sobnoski Killed in Columbus

Girard, Ohio (WKBN) – On Thursday night in Girard, crowds filled St. Rose’s Catholic Church to pay tribute to Kevin Sobnoski.

21 years old shot dead in a shootout At the Sheets gas station in Columbus over the weekend. Two of his others were in the car with him, but only Sobnoski was hit.

During the wake, Father Jordan Kelly delivered a message to the crowd about solidarity in difficult times.

“First of all, how do we take care of people? Kevin’s family is directly hit by this, but there are so many others,” he said.

Father Kelly says his thoughts are with those who loved Sobnoski, especially those who were there when he was shot.

“The boys who were in the car with him and their families, classmates from St. Rose, Girard High School and Youngstown State University,” he said.

Police say Sobnoski was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He and some friends stopped by the sheets when they were caught in a shootout.

While Sobnoski’s family seeks comfort and solace, police are still searching for the suspect.

“Everywhere I go people talk to me about Kevin. They’re all my parishioners and I’m… deep down, I’m the father. How do I take care of them?” How can I give… How does God give hope to Laura and Damian?” said Father Kelly.

Sobnoski’s funeral is scheduled for this Saturday.
