Potential deployment of new aircraft at Vienna’s Youngstown Air Force Base could mean school relocation
VIENNA TWP., OH (WKBN) – A presentation was held on Monday evening to discuss the future of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station (YARS) and Vienna Township. Now YARS is waiting to hear if they will Will be home to eight new C-130J aircraftbut the Pentagon wants to prevent problems in the future.
At a special meeting, Julie Greene, director of the Trumbull County Planning Commission, presented findings from a joint land use study with the Youngstown Air Reserve Base. This plan was put together to avoid future problems should the base acquire his new C-130J aircraft.
“For this land, the recommended maximum building heights are as follows,” Green pointed out.
The purpose is to prevent tall structures that could impact the aircraft.
“The maximum height that can be built is over 100 feet, even directly adjacent to the runway at certain locations,” Green said.
The Department of Defense also requires outdoor lighting in certain areas.
Vienna Township is all there for now, but research is for the future.
“Well, good luck today. What rules, regulations, and zoning expectations do you have to prevent stupid things from happening in the future?” Eastern Ohio Military Affairs Council (EOMAC) Chairman Dave Christner said:
One area already affected is Matthews High School. A plane was seen flying loudly over the school. School Board President Beth Huddle said teachers had to cancel classes because of the noise.
I recommend moving the school, but the problem is funding.
“We don’t get much from the Ohio Facilities Commission for our assessment. Only 16%. We need guidance,” said Russell McQuaid, superintendent of the Matthews Regional School District.
Ohio Rep. Nick Santucci says he can help schools as much as he can, but that’s on a federal level.
Green says he is discussing the matter with both Rep. Dave Joyce and Sen. J.D. Vance.
“We understand the difficulty of securing funding.
For now, everything is just a recommendation.
