Pennsylvania (WKBN) – Pennsylvania officials have finished collecting samples from most private wells around Pennsylvania. East Palestine railway derailmentaccording to a press release.
Governor Shapiro announced on Tuesday The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) planned to conduct the tests in a separate well within a mile or two of the train derailment site.
By Friday, DEP had collected samples from 13 of 16 wells within a mile of the site. DEP also plans to test a well located one to two miles from the site.
According to the press release, testing should be completed next week.
“DEP staff are now professionally and efficiently sampling drinking water near derailment sites, ensuring that Pennsylvanians have the information they need to keep themselves and their families safe. ‘, said Deputy DEP Director Rich Negrin.

DEP uses its own laboratory to test volatile organic compounds found in some vehicles, including vinyl chloride, ethylene glycol, butyl acrylate, ethylhexyl acrylate, benzene, and ethanol.
