Albert Pujols hits 703 career home runs in 2-3 loss to Pirates
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Move over, baby. Prince Albert is the new No. 2 on the big baseball list.
Albert Pujols hit 703 home runs Monday night to tie Babe Ruth for second all-time RBI.
The 42-year-old slugger tied the game scoreless in the sixth with a two-run shot off right-hander Mitch Keller of the St. Louis Cardinals off the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was Pujols’ 35 home runs at PNC Park, his most at a visiting stadium.
The drive brought Pujols’ RBI total to 2,216, surpassing Ruth on the all-time charts. Hank Aaron holds his record of 2,297.
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said after his team lost 2-3, “Getting past Babe Ruth is a big deal.” Any time he swings, I feel pretty good about where I am, and his home runs were very meaningful.”
Pujols, who plans to retire after the season, has 24 home runs. This is the most since his 31st home run with the Los Angeles Angels in 2016. He was one of only four players in his league history to score 700, Barry Bonds (762), Aaron (755) and Ruth (714).
Pujols did not speak to reporters after the game. A three-time MVP and an 11-time All-Star, he went hitless in eight at-bats against Keller.
“It’s been a great time to be with him and this team,” said Cardinals starter Jose Quintana. He wants to continue.”
