For many children, video games and computers have replaced physical activity. In fact, government research shows that children spend less time actively between the ages of 9 and 15. The decline is fastest between the ages of 12 and 15.
“Exercise is very important for lifelong health and habits should start in childhood,” says Amanda Buzowski, an exercise physiologist and health coach at the UPMC Health Plan. According to Budzowski, children need at least 60 minutes of exercise each day. It can help them stay or reach a healthy weight, strengthen their bones, and build their muscles.
“From type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure to obesity, as children grow older, inactivity causes all sorts of problems,” says Budzowski.

UPMC recognizes that children tend towards unhealthy options. So they advise the next steps for parents: get your child interested in healthier foods. Help your child plan a healthy menu each week.
