While the Red Plate is back with new ownership and updated menus, restaurant industry veteran restaurant leadership promises to maintain the same pristine and friendly atmosphere that has always been known. I will.
“It’s a very beautiful place,” said owner Ahmad Hori. Michael’s Family Restaurant Located in Douglasville and Exeter Township’s Sunset Family Restaurant. “We also keep this way.”
Houri has a 30-year career in the industry, grew up in a restaurant, and is now reaching out to his niece, Afraa Huwair, who owns the Red Plate Diner.
“All kitchen staff, I bring with me,” Houri said.
The name and face on the back of the house may have changed, but some of Redplate’s long-standing servers have been retained, adding to the warmth and friendliness of the dining room.
Red plate silver lining
Huwair purchased the Red Plate Diner from Christos and Victoria Kaltsas, who have owned and worked there since 2005.
Like many diner-themed restaurants, the Red Plate was completely closed in March last year during the coronavirus shutdown, rather than attempting to operate on a takeaway-only model.
After being allowed to reopen limited outdoor dining in June, the Red Plate did not reopen immediately, instead waiting until September to welcome guests.
The restaurant closed again in December due to an “increasing” number of coronavirus cases in Berks County.
Finally, the Red Plate was renewed for breakfast, lunch and dinner on Monday, under the direction of Huwair.
“I’m surprised and very happy that so many people have come,” said Hori. “Please give it a try. New management, new menus, great prices. Significant price cuts. Now it’s the price of the region.”
What’s new and what doesn’t change?
Mr. Hooley said the location of the Red Plate Diner is attractive from the perspective of both along Route 422 and the community in its vicinity.
The sparkling redplate dining room could also pass a brand new one, so it didn’t require any major refurbishment before launch.
“It’s a very busy place and a very nice area,” said Hooley. “Beautiful restaurant.”
The immediate menu is a typical American diner menu, wrapping a well-established entree such as all-day breakfast, soups, salads, burgers, open-faced turkey and roast beef sandwiches in gravy sauce.
Eventually, the red plate menu could expand and add a salad bar to the dining room.
Despite the one-year roller coaster, what has never changed is hospitality at the Red Plate Diner, and Huwair and Houri have promised to maintain that level of service.
