Warm December and warm 2021

Last month was one of the few snow-free Decembers with measurable snow, making two top 10 lists as the third warmest December and the fifth dry December on record.

A day without measurable snowfall is approaching a record area, but the expected snow overnight will end it.

Dryness and warmth are usually closely related, especially in warm months, but they also occur in cold months.

December 2021 joins 1998 (5th warmest and 3rd dry) and 1931 (7th warmest and 10th dry) as the same two listed months.

“December was a lively and noisy (weather) month for most of the country, but unusually good for Reading and Berks County,” said Jeffrey R., a native and retired meteorologist and meteorologist at Berks. Stout said.

90 days Total precipitation Calculated by a division of the National Weather Service was 50% of normal at the end of December.

According to Stoudt, snowfall was only traces, and in other December it was only traces.

“It wasn’t snowing completely in both 2001 and 2015,” he added. “A few locations in Burks reported a minimum measurable amount of snow (0.1 or 0.2) in December this year.”

On the other hand, the record for the lowest price on December 31 was shattered by a measurement of 49 degrees, an improvement of 43 degrees from 1906. The margin of six wins on the date record is extreme.

Overall 2021

Last year was another top 10 entry in terms of temperature. Precipitation was less than normal and could easily be even lower without some major events.

The Meteorological Department’s regional office, which oversees Burks in Mount Holly, NJ, had not yet calculated the county, but Stout did.

“I calculated the average by adding all the monthly totals available in each monthly climate report and dividing accordingly, such as by the average annual temperature of 730,” he said.

In doing so, he said he had reached a temperature of 55.9 degrees Celsius for Reading Regional Airport, Burks’ official weather service site.

“The temperature in 2020 was about the same as 56 degrees,” he said. “The calculated maximum / minimum averages are 65.5 and 46.3, respectively. They were also very close to the 2020 counterpart. The average 55.9 is just behind 56, the fifth warmest in 2020. , It’s been the sixth warmest year. “

The warm year is 1998, 56.4 degrees. 56.3 in 1949 and 2012; and 56.2 in 1953. The 1930s and 1950s, on average, remain the warmest period on record in Burks, but the last three decades are approaching.

Precipitation at the airport in 2021 officially totaled 41.82 inches, which included 33 inches of snow melting.

“It’s reasonably drier than usual,” Stoudt said. “But 2021 would have been really dry without the snow in February and the few heavy rains in July, August and September.”

2021 Stoudt weather highlights

• February snow blitz in Nor’easter, which began in the last few hours of January 31st and lasted four days.

• One of the new precipitation records was a 4.95 inch heavy rainfall from the tropical storm Aida on September 1. The storm caused many floods just east of Burks.

• August was tied at 77.8 degrees in 1955, the warmest time of the month.

• September was 8.22 inches, the eighth heaviest.

• October 2007 was tied at 61.5 degrees Celsius, the second warmest of the month.

• December was the third warmest place of the month.

• The annual maximum temperature on June 30 was 99 degrees Celsius, which was one degree higher than the average annual maximum temperature.
