Indiana’s Foreign War Veterans No. 1989 and its affiliates have announced this year’s Voice for Democracy Scholarship Competition for students in grades 9 through 12 and the Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition for students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Any student, whether high school or homeschooled, is eligible to participate in the competition. Each year, over 25,000 students compete for her over $2 million in scholarships and incentives.

Over 8 million high school students have participated in more than 70 years of foreign war veterans and their auxiliaries being the voices of democracy. Students compete by writing and recording a 3- to 5-minute audio essay expressing their views on this year’s patriotic theme, “Why Veterans Matter.”

All state winners receive at least $1,000 in scholarships, but one of them may win the first-place national scholarship award of $35,000, increased from $30,000.

State VOD winners and parents or guardians enjoy a 4-day all-paid tour of Washington DC with winners from all states, Pacific, Latin America/Caribbean, and Europe can do. In recent years, students have been invited to the White House to visit the President of the United States.

Approximately 125,000 young students nationwide each year enter the Patriot Pen Essay Competition and have the opportunity to win a portion of over $55,000 in prize money. This year’s patriotic theme is “My Pledge to Veterans”. The student types his 300- to 400-word essay.

Any local entrant could win the top national prize of $5,000. In the past, Pennsylvania participants have won national awards several times along with an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC with a parent or guardian.

Students in both categories start by competing at the local post level. Post winners advance to district competition. The winner from each of Pennsylvania’s 25 VFW districts will advance to the state competition, with a winner selected at the Midwinter Conference in the Harrisburg district in January to advance to the national level.

The deadline for student entries for both competitions is October 31st, with entry to the toe commander or chair. An independent reviewer reviews coded entries for anonymity.
