Use the COVID Relief Fund to attract more school bus drivers

Editor:

I was happy to read that the Berks County Intermediate Unit raised the salary of bus drivers by $ 4 per hour ()“Put in gear” Reading Eagle, October 24th).

While reading Reading Eagle Something happened to me a few weeks ago. The same reading school district, which suffers from a shortage of bus drivers, is the school district that received $ 168 million to address the COVID-19 crisis issue. The Reading School District, like BCIU, is likely to offer higher wages to bus drivers, as driver shortages are related to pandemics. This helps keep the drivers they have and attract a new generation of drivers in the district.

It seems strange to build a new school with COVID bailouts. District officials say the new school is to deal with population growth. Population growth is not a COVID related issue. There is a shortage of bus drivers.

If everything went well in terms of COVID, certainly go ahead and use the extra money for your normal needs. But how can districts that know they are negligent in resolving COVID-related crises use the COVID Relief Fund to address non-pandemic issues?
