Three Jefferson County Ambulance Services Celebrate 50 Years Together

BLOCKWAY, Pa. (WTAJ) – Brockway, Reynoldsville and Sykesville emergency services celebrated their 50th anniversary Sunday afternoon at the Brockway Regional Emergency Station.

All three agencies were established in 1973 after new legislation changed the coroner’s office’s responsibility to transport and treat patients.

“They wanted to get back to working as a mortician rather than treating patients and taking them to the hospital,” said Daniel Stitt, president of Reynoldsville Ambulance Services. “They were actually taking them to the hospital.”

The group took pictures before the meal, but Sisville arrived last because he had answered the call. Robbie Ambo, senior paramedic in Sykesville, said it was hard work, but he was able to come back because of the people in the community and the people he worked with.

“I’ve been working as a paramedic since 2001 and just celebrated my 18th anniversary as a paramedic yesterday,” Ambo said. “It’s a family matter.”

Gregory Castiglione, a Brockway Area Paramedic, said he has worked in emergency services his entire life. He says there’s one big difference that stands out compared to when they started.

“At the time, we had enough people to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in two shifts a day,” says Castiglione. “It was so easy. Now we’re seeing the struggle between volunteerism and efforts to get people to get certified and come help.”

All departments say volunteers are hard to come by because of the long-standing problem that has escalated across the state. Castiglione said people need to understand the importance of being able to contribute to the community immediately.

“The lack of help is getting worse,” Castiglione said. “We try to bring people into the community because nights when there are no people are as difficult as there are people coming from out of town to cover their shifts.”
