Unilever US has announced that it will recall two Suave brand spray antiperspirants due to “slightly increased” levels of carcinogenic chemicals.

Unilever, based in Englewoodcliff, NJ, said internal reviews showed that benzene levels were slightly elevated in some product samples. Benzene is not a component of any of the recalled products, but reviews have shown that unexpected levels of benzene were generated from propellants that spray the product from the can.

The recall includes all lots of Suave 24-hour protective aerosol antiperspirant powder and Suave 24-hour protective aerosol antiperspirant fresh with an expiration date of September 2023. The recall includes 4 ounces. And 6 ounces. Cans of UPC Code 079400751508 and 079400784902 and 6 oz Suave 24-hour protective aerosol antiperspirant powder. “Benzene is not a component of any of the recalled products, but reviews have shown that the propellant that sprays the product from the can produces unexpected levels of benzene,” said Unilever’s news release. .. “Other Unilever or Suave products are not subject to this recall.”

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, oral, and through the skin. It can cause cancers such as leukemia, blood cancers in the bone marrow, and potentially life-threatening blood disorders.

According to Unilever, humans around the world are exposed to benzene daily from multiple sources, both indoors and outdoors. Based on an independent health hazard assessment, daily exposure to benzene in recalled products is not expected to adversely affect health at the levels detected in the test.

The Suave 24-hour protective aerosol antiperspirant product line was discontinued in October 2021.

Unilever also offers refunds to consumers who purchase products affected by this recall. Consumers should discontinue use of affected Suave 24-hour protective aerosol antiperspirant products and dispose of them properly.
