DuBois Police Encourages Respect Between Drivers and Pedestrians

Clearfield County, Pennsylvania (WTAJ) – DuBois Police Department is working together to remind drivers and pedestrians that safety is everyone’s priority.

PennDOT worked with police to host an event where law enforcement enforced pedestrian enforcement. This is where cops monitor drivers who don’t give way to pedestrians and pedestrians who don’t obey traffic signs and signals.

Cpl. Prosper also explained the following nuances of vehicle rules regarding the rights and obligations of pedestrians:

  • Drivers do not have to give way until they start walking into the crosswalk.
  • Pedestrians should not walk or run unexpectedly into the path of moving vehicles.
  • Pedestrians should not assume that drivers will see or give way. Look left, right, left again before stepping out.
  • It is illegal for a driver to pass a vehicle that is stopped for pedestrians at a crosswalk.
  • It is illegal for a pedestrian to walk along an adjacent carriageway when walking along a road with a sidewalk and it is practical to use it.

Pedestrian Tips:

  • Cross Only at Crosswalks. Do not cross between parked cars.
  • Look left, look right, look left again, keep looking.
  • Wait for a gap in traffic before stepping one foot off the curb or entering the crosswalk completely to make eye contact with an approaching driver.
  • Always obey traffic signs and signals, especially pedestrian countdown timers.
  • See and be seen – drivers must see you to avoid you. Wear bright clothing during the day and reflective material at night. Also, carry a flashlight with you at night.
  • Watch out for vehicles turning at intersections, even if you have the right of way and are proceeding legally.
  • look at your kids Children can’t judge the speed and distance of the car and need an adult’s help for their safety.
  • On roads with multiple lanes in each direction, pay attention to what drivers in both lanes are doing nearby. If one driver allows you to cross, he may not notice you anymore.
  • If sidewalks are not available, walk to the side of the road whenever possible and always walk against traffic.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions.

Tips for drivers:

  • Slow down when approaching crosswalks and intersections. Be aware of pedestrians and be prepared to yield.
  • Yield to Pedestrians at Crosswalks – The law requires motorists to give way to pedestrians at crosswalks at intersections with and without traffic lights.
  • Move at a cautious speed. Don’t try to beat the light.
  • Note the crosswalk in the middle block. Pedestrians have right-of-way at crosswalks in the middle of blocks, so please give way to pedestrians.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected. Watch out for children who may jump out between cars or buses, or cross the middle of city blocks without using the crosswalk.
  • Drivers on streets with multiple lanes in each direction should be aware that pedestrians may be crossing all lanes.

“In 2022, we will have the second-highest number of pedestrian fatalities in 20 years,” said Corporal Orlando Prosper of the DuBois Police Department. “Many of these fatalities could have been prevented if everyone understood their responsibilities as drivers and pedestrians while sharing the road. It’s about raising the level of understanding and keeping all road users safe.”

According to 2022 PennDOT data, statewide, there were 3,167 crashes involving at least one pedestrian, resulting in 183 fatalities. Seven of these crashes occurred within Clearfield County and two within DuBois city limits, none of which resulted in fatalities.
