House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other top Democrats called for an investigation Thursday after the New York Times reported that the Justice Department under President Donald Trump had seized communications data from members of the House Intelligence Committee.
“The news about the Trump administration’s politicization of the Justice Ministry is disastrous. These actions appear to be yet another terrible attack on our democracy by the former president.”
The Times reported Thursday that the DOJ summoned data from at least two committee members, aides and family members to Apple in 2017 and 2018. The Times anonymously explained the investigation by a committee officer and two others.
Among those whose records were confiscated was California State Legislature Adam Schiff, who was then the Commission’s top Democrat.
Schiff, who is currently chairing the panel, said in a statement Thursday night: An incident suggesting the weaponization of law enforcement by a corrupt president. “
The Times reported that a subpoena came when the DOJ was trying to hunt down the cause of the leak that led to a news article about the contact between Trump’s companions and Russia.
