Too little sleep can harm a toddler’s

“Children who were getting inadequate sleep, less than nine hours a night at the start of the study, showed better performance in specific areas of the brain involved in attention, memory, and inhibitory control compared with children who slept well. We found that we had less gray matter or volume in our habits,” said study co-author Ze Wang. He is Professor of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.

“These differences persisted two years later, a worrying finding that suggests long-term harm for people who aren’t getting enough sleep,” Wang said in a university news release.

These differences were associated with more serious mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety and impulsive behavior, in those who slept too little. It was also associated with decision-making difficulties.

To promote optimal health, American Society of Sleep Medicine recommends that children ages 6 to 12 get 9 to 12 hours of sleep each night.

For the new study, researchers analyzed information gathered from more than 8,300 children aged 9 to 10 who participated in the Adolescent Cognitive Brain Development (ABCD) study. Investigators reviewed MRI scans, medical records, and questionnaires that the child and her parents completed at the beginning of the study and at physical examinations from her 11th to her 12th year. studyis supported by the National Institutes of Health and is the largest long-term study of child health and brain development in the United States.

Researchers found that participants in the group who got enough sleep tended to sleep less and less over two years. The team also considered a variety of factors that could affect a child’s sleep duration and brain development, including family income, gender, and whether they are in puberty.

“We tried to match the two groups as closely as possible so that we could more fully understand the long-term effects of sleep deprivation on the prepubertal brain,” said Wang. “Additional studies are needed to confirm our findings and to see if any intervention can improve sleep habits and reverse neurological deficits.”
