Two Pennsylvania legislators vote against debt ceiling bill

(WHTM) — The debt ceiling bill passed Congress Wednesday night with two Pennsylvania representatives voting against it. One member is a liberal Democrat, the other a conservative Republican, and both share a disdain for the bill, but for very different reasons.

All Republicans in Pennsylvania voted in favor of the debt ceiling bill, except for Scott Perry, who argued that it would not cut spending enough.

“Some might say it was a good deal. I would say it was more Democrat than Republican,” said Rep. Scott Perry (Republican, Pennsylvania 10th District). “We literally have to borrow money every single time just to pay off our debts. ”

But Mr Perry’s Commonwealth Congress colleagues disagree.

“This act was not perfect. We need to curb spending more, but we also have a responsibility to pay our debts and move forward to protect the U.S. economy,” said Rep. John Joyce, Republican, Pennsylvania. District 13) said.

“Some people chose not to vote for this bill because it didn’t do enough. You know, if you can get the ball on the field a yard at a time, it’s worth it.” I think,” added Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-11th District, Pennsylvania).

All but one Pennsylvania Democrat voted in favor of the bill. Proud progressivist Summer Lee argued that the additional cuts were too many.

“We can’t use the poorest as a bargaining chip, and we can’t reward Republican thugs and their extreme tactics with more votes than they need to postpone a default,” Lee said.

The Republican chair won more votes from Democrats than from Republicans.

“It certainly doesn’t look good,” says Perry. “If you’re achieving your opponent’s goal, it’s not a success at that point.”

Mr Perry said Speaker of the House McCarthy is not in danger of being ousted, but his Freedom caucus is frustrated.

“We’re going to take some time next week and see how we can fix things so that this kind of blunder doesn’t happen again,” Perry said.

But other Republican lawmakers seem fed up with the demands of the Freedom Caucus. Smucker didn’t name Perry, but he said:

“At our meeting, I was disappointed with the number of people who did not vote for this because it was a good bill, a good conservative bill. . It’s on the bill,” Smucker said.

Both Lee and Perry are former state representatives from Harrisburg, and one source said if Lee disagrees and Perry disagrees, it should be fine.
