As a company or team leader, it’s only natural to seek the best. After all, finding trading best practices and tricks can save you valuable time.
This natural desire to achieve success often leads to questions that may sound familiar. You may have heard it yourself at some point. Questions like: What is the best organizational structure, the best compensation program, the best incentive plan, or the best strategic planning process?
You understand the idea. A list of items added at the end of “What’s Best”. .. .. The questions are endless.
I often get questions like this from clients and Vistage members. I hate disappointment, but it’s the best answer to all “what’s the best”. .. .. The question is, it’s different.
There is nothing absolute to run a business because it depends on many factors, such as the life cycle stage of the current organization of the business, the resources available, and the company’s greatest needs at the time.
Here are some examples.
Let’s start with the structure. In the early days, there was no structure. Everyone on the team has to tip, make the next sale, and do whatever it takes to get the product out of the door. This structure often looks like a founder surrounded by everyone else. Businesses need a high degree of flexibility and responsiveness to survive, which some might call the necessary disruption.
As an organization matures, it establishes more forms and functions about who is doing what it needs to do. This is where the first level of management evolves, often with a second person responsible for some form of operations and / or accounting. It is the birth of written policies and procedures. Without this added structure, the turmoil that was once needed would be more harmful than good.
Looking at strategic planning, needs are different as well. Young and growing companies need convergent thinking focused on what they shouldn’t do in order to stay focused on what they can actually offer with limited resources. Aging companies, on the other hand, need divergent thinking to stay relevant in response to changing trends and are looking for new products and markets.
The most important thing to understand in this world of nothing absolute is that there is no ideal “executive” to help a company from birth to maturity. When a company is born, the energy and entrepreneurship of the founder is very important. A more mature organization requires a longer range of thinking and financial insight.
When you come to the point of asking “what is the best”. .. .. , “Here are some questions to ask yourself.
What is the most important thing for your organization at the moment? In some cases it may be speed or it may be quality. One year may be agility and the other may be control.
It’s still worth asking for ideas from those who were / did it. However, keep in mind that at this time, someone else’s perfect solution may not be suitable for you or your organization.
With a versatile solution for all situations, there aren’t many product and service options available.
Checking other people’s samples and templates can be helpful, but never blindly imitate others. Take the time to weigh your options against what you currently need. Because there is an absolute person in management. it depends!
