The WB area threat came from outside the state.School will resume on Monday

Wilkes-Barre-The threat that the Wilkes-Barre regional school district closed all schools on Friday and urged them to switch to online learning came from outside the state, Brian Costello announced Friday afternoon. School will resume on Monday.

The district received information about the threat on Thursday at around 11:39 pm and was speaking to teachers to prepare for online lessons by around 6 am. On Friday, all schools were closed to students and staff. Director Brian Costello released just before 6:30 am.

Plains Township Police and other law enforcement agencies have been notified and an investigation has begun. At around 2:40 pm, Costello released additional information, stating that “the threat was tracked to another state that was contacting and investigating local law enforcement agencies.”

This tip came through the state’s Safe2SaySomething system, a youth violence prevention program run by the Attorney General of Pennsylvania. Anonymous tips can be reported by phone or online. Hintline operators quickly pass information to school districts and law enforcement authorities for appropriate response.

Due to the ongoing investigation, Costello did not identify which school was involved in the threat or which state the threat came from. But he said it was “not uncommon” to get threats from outside the district and even from outside the state through the Safe2Say system.

“I would like to commend the students for sharing this information with us and thank the families for helping us early in the morning,” Costello wrote in an afternoon email. “While it was inconvenient for many parents, students and families today, our community can guarantee that the safety of our students and staff is always our top priority.”

All schools open on Mondays.
