Why use an air conditioning unit for an electrical cabinet

Industrial air conditioners for electrical panels are increasingly used by large industries. Why? There are several reasons, but first of all:

  • they offer lower energy consumption and therefore lower costs;
  • higher operational efficiency;
  • long life of heat-sensitive electrical components.

 The cabinet cooling unit is useful because it helps to cool and dehumidify, promoting a recirculation of clean air thanks to the components that produce heat. This provides a protection service against high temperatures, humidity, dust and other possible contaminants in the air. You can find ac unit for electrical cabinet in different models and sizes. According to the characteristics the load-bearing capacity changes and uses may differ.

How to use an air conditioner for an electrical cabinet

A cabinet air conditioner removes the heat generated by electronic devices from inside the cabinets. The heat generated reaches extremely high temperatures and can be very dangerous. This is why air conditioners for cabinets are important: they are used above all for the safety of production processes and personnel in case some component breaks. Thanks to this kind of protection, risks are severely reduced. These devices use refrigerants and offer thermostatic controls, so that the temperature can be adjusted as desired.

 There are three ways to cool a cabinet:

  • natural convection cooling: there is no need for an active cooling section, you only focus on forced convection with a closed circuit air conditioner;
  • forced convection: it is chosen only if the ambient temperature outside is lower than that inside the cabinet;
  • closed circuit cooling: it is especially used if there is clean and fresh air outside the cabinet.

 Cooling in a closed circuit system is definitely safe, thanks to the housing and because it prevents damage that can tamper with the electronic circuit within. Some models evaporate the condense autonomously and automatically, without the need to drain. Others have an air flow sensor capable of controlling the condenser temperature. This way there is no danger that blockage or contamination will compromise the efficiency of the process.

Features of an air conditioner for an electrical cabinet

Cabinet air conditioners can take advantage of two types of power supply: single-phase or three-phase. These two differ in terms of cooling efficiency. When we talk about cooling capacity we are referring to the ability of the air conditioning unit to remove heat from the industrial environment.

Furthermore, it must be considered that the electrical panels are designed above all to allow cooling through natural ventilation, which is then supplemented by forced ventilation. This solution can work well in many cases but not all of them, because overheating of electrical panels can occur due to environmental limits, internal heat load and air flow capacity.

Precisely in these cases the air conditioners for cabinets are really crucial, because they solve the problems of high temperature inside the electrical cabinets. This can make the components last longer while the risk of overheating can be avoided. The thermal load is the heat generated in a cabinet (expressed in Watts). Let’s see how to deal with the risk of overheating in different situations.

How to remove excess heat in different situations

Electrical panels located in industrial environments with very high temperatures cannot take advantage of natural cooling. This is because the air temperature is higher than the temperatures that are considered optimal for interacting with electrical equipment, since they can undergo overheating or breakdown. If you want to keep electrical equipment safe, the only viable method is to use air conditioning in the electrical cabinet.

There are cases when metal equipment can come into contact with the effect of solar radiation. In such a situation, natural ventilation is not enough: the internal temperatures of the electrical panels could reach too dangerous levels. This is a common situation in very hot and tropical places. If the enclosures are to be left in open places, a cabin air conditioner is required.

As for dusty environments, electrical equipment must not be left open and in contact with dust. In fact, natural ventilation is not a good idea in these cases. To protect the equipment optimally, sealed switchboards with cabin air conditioners must be installed.

On the other hand, when you are dealing with very ventilated areas, the electrical cabinets can overheat if the thermal load reaches too high temperatures. Thanks to a cabinet air conditioner it is possible to eliminate excess heat from electrical panels making the environment cooler.

Another situation you may find yourself in is one where the space for electrical panels is very small. In this case the tool is usually powered at medium voltage thanks to a drag cable. Even in this situation, the air conditioning of the cabinet can be essential to keep temperatures within certain parameters, so that there is no risk of overheating.
