Summer raises challenges for feeding children

Summer is often the most enjoyable time of the year for children. However, many parents and guardians may be worried about how to increase their budget to replace the diets that children normally eat at school.

During the school year, children can rely on programs that serve breakfast, lunch, and after-school meals. However, when school is closed, many of those important meals disappear, and summer is a hungry time for many children.

A summer meal program run by a local school or community group provides free and healthy meals for children and teens in familiar locations such as parks, pools, libraries and recreation centers. It helps to fill that gap.

Kid Hungry’s summer meal text messaging service makes it quick and easy for families to find the nearest summer meal location. Parents, grandparents and caregivers can find free summer meals in the community by simply sending “FOOD” or “COMIDA” to 304-304.

All children in Pennsylvania are worth enjoying a happy summer without hunger. That way, you’ll be back in school in the fall to be well and ready to study.
