Southern Schuylkill Church unites for volunteer event

Now in its seventh year, the church has left the building. This is an opportunity for two local churches to work together to bring hope to multiple residents of southern Schuylkill County. A team of local volunteers from Reidsville’s Grace EC Church, Schuylkill Haven and Bethesda EC Church gave hope to 26 residents from Pine Grove to Dear Lake and Lake Winona to Port Carbon.

On October 10th, more than 120 volunteers lined up to provide roof slab rubble, porch painting, home repairs, meal preparation, garden cleaning, friendly smiles and help in need. It gave hope to many elderly people and their families.

You may be wondering why these volunteers aren’t in church on Sunday. Rev. Jeffrey Byerley of the Bethesda EC Church answers his own question: “What is worship?” Then he answers this question from the Bible. “Therefore, I urge you, your brothers and sisters, to consider God’s mercy and offer your body as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your true. Appropriate worship of (Romans 12: 1). “

Pastor Ted Rasman of the Grace EC Church adds: It means doing something that pleases God. When the inhabitants feel hope, they can see God more clearly, and that is what worship does — allows us to see God more clearly. “

A few weeks before the event, project leaders gathered to pray, seek help from local businesses, organize work, and recruit volunteers from the church. Local food banks distributed postcards to promote the event and ask residents in need for help. In the end, 26 locations were evaluated and approved in various service projects. They were able to use skilled and unskilled workers from within their congregation to reach each location and perform their assigned duties.

Local companies supporting this year’s project included Alpine Building Supply, Werner Lumber, Ark CallManager, Lowe’s and Miller Brothers Construction.
