Sage Karam and Marco Andretti finished 22nd and 23rd in the fastest Indy 500 qualifying since 1996 – Wake-up call

Miami Gardens, Florida —Saturday rain completes the first round of Indianapolis 500 qualifying on a soup-like day, producing stunning speeds not seen on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for 26 years. It was long enough for me.

A pair of young rising stars, Rinus Vee Kay and Pato O’Ward, posted a ferocious qualifying average of over 233 mph with Chevrolet’s horsepower flex. NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson competed in his first Indy 500, and his Chip Ganassi Racing Team has shown that it may currently be Indy’s strongest organization.

Meanwhile, Andretti Autosport had a terrible day. And Team Penske noticed a bit of the weather when he pulled Scott McLaughlin’s qualifying time late Saturday afternoon and sent him back in an attempt to break the top 12. New Zealanders were even slower and fell to 26th place.

“Well, this place was private and just kicked (me) — oh well,” McLaughlin posted on social media.

Penske’s teammate Josef Newgarden sought for the top 12 after McLaughlin, but his lightning flashed and his run stopped. The second lightning strike of the day caused it to rain a few minutes later. IndyCar called it about 70 minutes before the scheduled completion.

Only spots 13-33 will be locked on Saturday and the top 12 will be back on Sunday for Paul’s shootout. The front row battles are Vee Kay and O’Ward, who set the third and fifth fastest four-lap qualifying averages in track history, and Chevrolet’s Felix Rosenqvist, who dominated the top three spots.

IndyCar Champion Alex Palou set the fourth fastest time as Ganassi advanced the entire five cars to action on Sunday. In the Honda-equipped team, Tony Kanaan was 5th, Johnson was 6th, Marcus Ericsson was 8th, and Scott Dixon was 10th.

Ed Carpenter, who recorded the eighth fastest lap in track history at 234.410 mph on Saturday morning, was sixth fastest in qualifying as he and Willpower (11th) completed the Chevrolet group.

Honda advanced seven drivers on Sunday, joining the Ganassi Group with the only Andretti driver, Romain Grosjean, and two-time winner Takuma Sato.

Sato had a roller coaster session. He was disqualified after the first qualifying attempt to thwart Marco Andretti’s lap. Sato rubbed the wall on his second attempt and was still in the top 12.

Spots 7-12 of the May 29 race will be determined in another qualifying round, and after a break, a “fast six” shootout will set the first two rows of the Indy 500’s 106th run.

Ed Carpenter Racing’s Vee Kay placed the Chevrolet on top of the scoring pylon at an average speed of 233.655 mph on four laps, raising the Oward of Aroma McLaren SP to second place with 233.037.

Arie Luyendyke set a four-lap qualifying record of 236.986 in 1996, with Vee Kay averaging third fastest after Luyendyke and Scott Brayton’s 233.718 mark. O’Ward’s average was the fifth fastest in history, with Tony Stewart fourth in 1996.

“It’s really cool to have two Dutch in the top five fastest in history,” said Vee Kay from the Netherlands, who likes Luyendyk.

Johnson once again showed incredible speed, lapping at 233.961 mph in early Saturday morning practice. This is the 14th fastest speed in truck history.

“I think speed scared my kids,” Johnson said. “Look at their eyes when they see me. They have been to many races, but they have never seen me that way.”

The seven NASCAR champions have steadily become legitimate candidates for his fifth victory at the Indianapolis Oval, the Indy 500. Johnson won NASCAR four times.

Andretti Autosport struggled from the beginning as Marco Andretti had to cancel the qualifying and Sato couldn’t get off the track following the moment of the previous run.

Andretti starts on the 23rd.

“Don’t count 98 to win this race,” he said.

Colton Herta’s engine seemed to have failed while Hertha was running when the team was thinking about what to do with Andretti. Hertha, who won the road course just a week ago, was trying to qualify when Honda’s engine suddenly stopped.

He stopped running and returned to the pits, where he later confirmed that the engine would change.

After that, 2016 winner Alexander Rossi made a disastrous first run. “We’ve added downforce,” said Rossi, who called the decision “terrifying.”

His second attempt was even worse, with Rossi starting in 20th place. Rookie Devlin de Francesco starts in 24th place and Hertha starts in 25th place.

The last row of the Indy 500 is rookie Christian Lungard, Jak Ali Harvey, and the 33rd entry, Stephen Wilson. Wilson had a gearbox problem on Saturday and needed to replace the engine, but he never got off the ground.
