Sacred Heart Academy’s Regan Dougherty is a mainline student of the week – Mainline Media News

Regan Doherty, a junior at the Sacred Heart Academy, is the school’s 2023 president and co-founder of the Student Club Equity Initiative, which focuses on understanding unjustified issues. She is also a student dialogue leader and SpeakUp! leader. Dougherty is the Sacred Heart Commission on Goals Student Liaison and a member of the Sacred Heart Network Dialogue, the School Choir, and the Varsity Basketball Team, which has won District 1 titles for the last six consecutive years.

Mainline Media News: Tell us a little bit about the Sacred Heart Network dialog and its purpose. What was your most rewarding experience as a student dialogue leader?

Regan Dougherty: Sacred Heart Network Dialogue is a program in which students from all over the country attending Sacred Heart Network schools participate in monthly virtual conferences. A two-hour dialogue session to discuss various topics. Learn important dialogue skills, discuss current events, and explore topics such as crossing and environmental awareness. This program helped me develop new perspectives and engage in conversations that I wouldn’t normally be able to do on a daily basis. I loved to connect with students all over the country and get intimate with each session.

Mainline Media News: What are the most discussed issues since the establishment of the Equity Initiative Club?

Regan Dougherty: Dig into the topic of crossing and gender. One of the biggest discussions we had last year was about gender and sports. Many students had similar experiences they shared. We talked about things that we never felt “good enough” or that we were hampered by certain prejudices because of our gender. The club helped clarify me and other students, recognizing that there are far more similarities than we expected.

Mainline Media News: What are you most proud of as President of 2023?

Regan Dougherty: This year, I worked with three other class officers to plan a junior ring mass and prom for our school. The ceremony is an important tradition in our school where each junior receives her Sacred Heart Ring. I’ve been looking forward to receiving class rings since I was a junior high school student, so it was great to be able to plan the ceremonies and dances that followed.

Mainline Media News: What was the most interesting discussion topic of your time at SpeakUp!

Regan Dougherty: The most interesting discussion topic of my time at SpeakUp! It was definitely school pressure. We mainly talked about the pressures surrounding the university and the pressure to participate in multiple extracurricular activities while maintaining good grades. It was interesting because I was able to hear various perspectives from teachers to students and parents. I learned that everyone is together and that we are not alone in our journey.

Mainline Media News: What is your favorite performance song in the school choir? What is the reason?

Regan Dougherty: My favorite performance song in the choir is definitely SuoGan. It is held every year at the school’s tradition of “Christmas at the Mansion,” which is held every Christmas time. I love playing this song. Because it never puts me in the spirit of Christmas. My mother also loves this song, so she likes to play it repeatedly in the car at every Christmas choir concert or performance.

Mainline Media News: What is your favorite experience with the Varsity Basketball team this season?

Regan Dougherty: My favorite experience with the team is seeing everyone grow throughout the season. As the season progresses, I love to see the progress and confidence of the team. Basketball also gave me the opportunity to get closer to people outside my grade. I love spending time with seniors and juniors, such as team dinners and trips to Wawa before practice. Each of my teammates has encouraged me to be better players and teammates on and off the court.

Mainline Media News: What is your favorite academic course at Sacred Heart Academy? What is the reason?

Regan Dougherty: My favorite academic course at Sacred Heart is American literature. I’m a very big reader and I love it because English has definitely been my favorite subject for the last four years. I just finished Kate Chopin’s “Awakening” and am currently reading F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby”. Analyzing literature and listening to different perspectives on reading material is really interesting to me and I look forward to my daily lessons.

Mainline Media News: What is your favorite book and why? Who is your favorite writer and why?

Regan Dougherty: My favorite book is Conversations With Friends by Sally Rooney. I love the characters and settings of the book, Dublin. By building a meaningful relationship with her passion for art and people, I have many relationships with the protagonist. My favorite writer is probably Rick Riordan, thanks to Percy Jackson’s series. That was the reason I fell in love with reading when I was young.
