Rodale Institute Receives $ 1.2 Million From Giant Checkout Donation | Money

A three-month checkout Roundup program at the Giant Supermarket has raised $ 1.2 million for the Roder Institute.

Funding was raised through GIANT Company’s Healing Our Planet campaign from March to May, allowing customers to round up checkout purchases to the nearest dollar at Giant, Martin’s, and Giant Heirloom Market stores.

The donations will be used to support the Roder Institute’s Farmer Training Program, Farmer Consulting Services, and research projects.

The two organizations are deeply rooted in Pennsylvania. Based in Maxa Tawny Township, the Rodale Institute has been conducting research on regenerative organic farming and farmer training and educational opportunities since 1947, and currently operates eight campuses in four states. Founded in 1923 in Carlyle, The Giant Company includes the Giant Food Store, Martin’s, Giant Heirloom Market, Giant Direct, and Martin’s Direct. Giant is a company of Ahold Delhaize USA.

“It’s very exciting to see the support for renewable organic farming not only from The Giant Company, but also from our customers,” Jeff Moyer, CEO of the Rodale Institute, said in a news release.

“We have always felt that consumers are at the heart of the renewable organic movement. Now customers not only bring back beautiful organic foods to feed their families, but we also build regeneration. He supported my work. An organic future. “

The Giant presented the Rodel Institute with a $ 1,183,440 check at a ceremony held Thursday at the Rodel Institute’s Kutztown headquarters.

“At The Giant Company, we strive every day to heal the planet, but we know that we all need to work together to make the most of it,” Bertram said in a release. We are very grateful for sustainability and for donating over $ 1 million to the Rodale Institute during our recent fundraising campaign. “

Following the check presentation, an organic relay race between Moyer and Bertram was held with an intern from the Farmers Training Program. Team members competed in the selection, processing, and packaging of farm share boxes, a process that many novice farmers in the Rodale Institute training program carry out as part of their education.

“Today is a happy day because food is basic. Farmers are returning to the fields and Pennsylvania needs more farmers,” Cook said in a release.

The donation directly supports three major initiatives of the Rodale Institute, with a focus on farm consulting, farm training and research.

  • The Rodale Institute’s Organic Crop Consulting Services was launched in 2019 with the support of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. This service assists farmers seeking a transition to organic farming through one-on-one mentorship with institute-trained agronomists.
  • The Rodale Institute Farmer Training Program is an on-site internship that trains novice farmers for a career in renewable organic farming and supports the Institute’s Farm Share Program, Mobile Pop-up Market and Farmers Market.
  • One of Rodale’s ongoing research studies linking healthy soil to human health. These programs aim to heal people and the planet by increasing organic acres, training new organic farmers, and putting science behind the organic movement.

In addition to the Rodale Institute, additional funding has been raised for the Planet Bee Foundation and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.
