Rizzo shines again with a key hit and the Yankees defeat the Marlins 3-1

Miami — Anthony Rizzo continued the Yankees’ remarkable debut, recording another key hit. New York completed a three-game sweep on Sunday, beating the Miami Marlins 3-1.

Miami’s partisan New York crowd finally cheered when the Yankees had eight rallies highlighted by RBI singles from Reso and Aaron Judge.

Rizzo, who attended high school in the Miami area, had his home Brett Gardner tie in his third match against the Yankees. First baseman was won in a deal from the Chicago Cubs at the deadline and hit home in each of the first two games against New York before Sunday’s turn at bat.

“You talk to anyone around the league, and they will tell you that (Reso) is one of those really special elite players,” said the Yankees manager Aaron Boone. .. “It’s just one part of his composition as a great ball player.”

Giancarlo Stanton, who reached the slow error of third baseman Brian Anderson, raced home with a go-a-head run with a sharp single from the judge.

Joely Rodriguez (2-3), who came from the Texas Rangers on a contract with Joey Gallo, needed only one pitch to win his first victory on his first expedition with a new team. Anthony Bass (1-6) lost.

Aroldis Chapman retired from the side in the bottom of the ninth inning with his 22nd save.

The Yankees added an insurance run in the ninth inning when Gleyber Torres raced at home after two errors in the same play by Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Gardner, who started his second half comeback with a single along the way, said the clubhouse was already very aware of what Rizzo would bring to the team.

“We know what he can do and the approach he takes at every turn at bat,” Gardner said. “It’s just the energy he brings to the stadium every day … it’s great that he’s on our side. He keeps growing for us.”

The comeback has ruined one of the better outings of the season by Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara. Sandy Alcantara moved up the day after he was scheduled to start the match against Mets on Monday.

Alcantara retired nine of the first ten batters he faced, but the only drawback was a walk to Tyler Wade. In seven innings, he gave up only two hits. A single to the right by the 4th judge and a double by the 7th Garo.

“He’s as tough as you face,” Boone said. “The pitching staff is very good and (Alcantara) makes up the majority.”

Garo was on third base, with two outs in seven innings when Alcantara grounded Torres out and completed the outing. He retired 21 of the 24 batters he faced and struck out to match the best 10 of the season. He walked alone.

Alcantara is determined to stay focused and get the job done on the mound, despite the continued lack of aggressive support during the start.

“I don’t feel any pressure,” Alcantara said. “… We have to keep working hard and keep playing the game.”

The Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery played in his career’s best 14 2/3 scoreless inning streak, but it soon ended when Miami jumped into a 1-0 1 inning advantage.

Miguel Rojas lined up the lead-off doubles in the center left and advanced to 3rd place with Chisholm’s infield hits. Brian Anderson scored the RBI.

Montgomery has allowed up to 3 runs in each of the last 8 starts. Left-handed throws 5 innings, 3 hits and 1 run, 1 run. He hit five.

A memorable hit

The Miami of Brian de la Cruz, acquired by the Houston Astros to approach Yimi Garcia on the closing date, scored a single in the center five times for his first MLB hit.

A 24-year-old from the Dominican Republic, De La Cruz had a batting average of .324 and scored 88 hits in the pre-trade Triple A Sugarland.

Blooper reel

Rizzo was charged with his first error when the harmless pop-up of Chisam Jr. landed between Rizzo and shift shortstop Gleyber Torres in the third inning, after a wonderful first two days at Pinstripe. Rizzo seemed to retreat from a seemingly easy catch after Torres suddenly moved towards play.

Top pick sign

Kahlil Watson, Marlins’ first choice in the 2021 MLB draft, has officially signed the deal.

18-year-old Watson, a high school shortstop from Wake Forest, North Carolina, reports to Miami’s Single A affiliate in Jupiter, Florida, with 20 other signatories in Miami starting their first training.
