There are many movies out this holiday season, but only one can see the slugs singing Drake’s “Hotline Bling”. Oh, the magic of the movie!
“Sing 2” The sequel to the 2016 anime hit, repacked with over 40 jukeboxes, from BTS to Billie Eilish. Two films, Despicable Me and Illuminations, the animation studio for Minions, draw a lot of charm from a karaoke game that combines chart-top hits with the right humanoids. The options are as vast as the animal kingdom. Should Cardi B be sung by Bumblebees? Is it on the nose to give the stallion “savage”?
However, the writer / director Garth Jennings’s film isn’t just a series of pop tunes spliced together with enthusiastic and sweet cartoon sweets. The movie is about live performance collaboration, chambolic thrills. First, the bow-tied koala Impresario Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) held a singing contest to save his struggling theater. Moon and his stable performers will be very active in “Sing 2”, which will be unveiled at the theater on Wednesday. After snooty talent scouts fired their group not enough to climb the local theater, Moon buys a bus ticket and heads to Red Shore City, a shining desert metropolis instead of Las Vegas. ..
Moon promises to mount the show with Bobby Cannavale’s white wolf, tyrant mogul Jimmy Crystal, and the unwritten SF musical and star (Bono’s voiced Clay Calloway). I swear to have a retired lion in the name) who hasn’t been cast yet. Emogorilla Johnny (Taron Egerton), porcupine pop star Ash (Scarlett Johansson), sensitive elephant Mina (Tori Kelly), pig duo, Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), gunter (Nick Kroll) gather to see the sights. Rehearse Produced with some others like Crystal’s spoiled daughter Porsha (Halcy, be careful perfectly).
It’s all amiable, shallow and sometimes sweet. Most of the music on the wall is quickly pulled from the studio’s best-selling shelves, but there are bitter and silent moments behind the bus where the gang is rehearsing. “hole” Mercury Rev, an indie act of the 90’s. If the story thread puts the movie together, it’s each character dealing with its own version of anxiety, horror, stage phobia as a performer. It’s a praiseworthy message for a children’s movie, but I’ve been drowning in the commercialized Blair of the movie.
With one exception, not many characters come. Miss Crawly, an elderly iguana with glass eyes that Jennings called out, adds a slapstick comedy to the pop parade. She’s a mess, but she’s the only one who knows the only important thing about Sing 2, how to hold a show.
Universal Studios’ release, Sing 2, has been rated as a PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for some rude material and mild danger / violence. Execution time: 112 minutes. 2 out of 4 stars.
