PennDOT data reveal safety benefits of roundabouts.work

PennDOT data shows that roundabouts are effective in reducing deaths, injuries and collisions.

Data revealed an overall reduction in fatalities, injuries, and post-collisions at 33 intersections. Replaced by 36 roundabouts.

“We continue to confirm that the Pennsylvania roundabout saves lives and reduces the severity of conflicts,” said PennDOT Administrator Yasmin Gramian. “It’s not the right option for every intersection, but we’re happy to help make the roads safer.”

PennDOT recently reviewed data for 36 roundabouts on state highways at intersections that were previously stop or signal controlled. These roundabouts were selected based on the availability of crash data for at least three years before and after the roundabout was constructed. This equates to a total of 387 years of pre- and 220-year data.

Departmental data from 2002 to 2021 – based on crash reports filed by police and weighted based on years before and after, not traffic growth – shows:

  • 76% reduction in suspicion of serious injury
  • 22% reduction in suspected minor injuries
  • 70% reduction in possible/unknown severity injuries
  • Total number of crashes decreased by 9%

Unfortunately, one person died at one of the roundabouts. But in total he killed three people before setting up 33 roundabouts.

In addition to the 36 roundabouts that meet the selection criteria, 38 roundabouts have been built on the highway, another 16 are under construction and 15 are in final design.

Roundabouts are frequently installed to address unsafe intersections, but are also installed to improve traffic flow, calm traffic and facilitate pedestrian movement. sometimes.

Roundabouts are safer and generally more efficient than traditional signalized intersections, but they are always the best choice due to terrain and other reasons (property impact, capacity issues, proximity to other intersections, etc.). Not necessarily.

The roundabout is Pennsylvania Transportation Innovation Council (STIC) As an innovation that has become standard practice within the transportation community.

To educate Pennsylvanians how to navigate roundabouts, the department produced videos on how to use both single-lane and multi-lane roundabouts by car, bicycle, or on foot.

Videos can be accessed by visiting roundabout PennDOT website page or department Youtube channel.
