Quintana makes seven innings and beats the Marlins 1-0.

Pittsburgh (AP) — When the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Miami Marlins 1-0 on Saturday night, José Quintana threw 7 innings, combining two relief pitchers with five batters.

Quintana (3-5) allowed four hits to match the best innings of the season. He had four strikeouts and no walks. Wil Crowe and all-star David Bednar each continued one inning. Bednar recorded his 17th save with 21 chances, completing the third shutout of the Pirates season.

The Marlins have been blank for the fourth time in the last five games. They ended the 37-inning unscored drought on Friday with an 8 to 1 victory over the Pirates.

The highly advertised Marlins rookie Max Meyer left the game in the first inning with discomfort in his right elbow. Miami suffered a fifth defeat in six games and used six pitchers.

Yoshitomo Tsutsugo knocked in the game’s solo run with six singles as Pirates won his second victory in seven games.

With the closing date approaching August 2, the days with the Quintana pirates could end. The 33-year-old is a free agent at the end of the season and competing teams are reportedly interested in dealing with him.

Quintana got help from his defenses when Pirates double-played behind him three times. The biggest came the third time when Miguel Rojas landed on the 6-4-3 double play at the end of the innings with the runners once and three times.

The Marlins also played once and twice in eight, but Nick Fortes jumped out to finish the rally.

On his second career start, Meyer faced three batters, threw 10 pitches, and then met managers Don Mattingly and an athletic trainer on the mound.

23-year-old Meyer made his debut last Saturday and lost to Philadelphia at home. The Marlins ranked him third overall in the 2020 draft.

Movement of the pirate list

Pirates chose new relief Colin Holderman for Triple A Indianapolis the day after he acquired him from the New York Mets in a trade with designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach. Manager Derek Shelton said Holderman is likely to be promoted to Pittsburgh soon.

Pirates made another deal with Mets on Saturday, paying catcher Michael Perez for cash. Perez was playing in Indianapolis before being assigned to the quota.

Trainers room

Marlins: LF Jorge Soler was put on the 10-day injured list for back cramps. He was the World Series MVP who led Atlanta in Houston last season. OFJJ Bladey, fourth in the 2019 draft, chose a deal from Triple A Jackson Building. Breday played in the seventh inning with the left fielder of his major league debut and walked in his first at bat.

Marlins: RHP Sandy Alcantara (9-4, 1.76) starts on Sunday. He leads the NL in ERA and is the worst pitcher in Miami in the first 17 starts of the season since Josh Johnson scored the 1.62 mark in 2010.

Pirates: RHP Mitch Keller (3-7, 4.55) has admitted less than three earned runs in seven out of nine starts since returning from the bullpen to rotation on May 31st.
