Fort Smith, Arkansas (AP) — Police in Arkansas said three people were killed on Sunday after police fired weapons while protecting themselves from knife attacks.
Police provided little information about what happened, such as how people died and how Fort Smith police officers fired their guns. Police did not immediately reveal whether one of the dead was shot or stabbed by a police officer. The incident occurred on Sunday at about 6:15 am at Fort Smith, about 160 miles (260 km) northwest of Little Rock.
According to Fort Smith police spokesman Arick Mitchell, the police officer was injured and had surgery on Sunday morning.
The department asked the Arkansas State Police to investigate. Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said additional information could not be provided immediately.
Both Mitchell and Sadler said authorities could provide more information late Sunday afternoon.
