Durham, North Carolina (AP) —A man in police custody was shot dead in an emergency room in North Carolina early Saturday after fighting with police officers, officials said.

The man was detained by Durham police and was being treated at Duke University Hospital, media reported.

While receiving treatment, he began wrestling with officers and carried a gun, Duke Health Director Sarah Avery said in a statement.
