Phoenixville’s mom convicted of kidnapping a 6-year-old child

PHOENIXVILLE — A jury convicted a Phoenixville woman for abducting minors, hiding her child’s whereabouts, and endangering her child’s welfare.

Rebecca Kirshenbaum, 50, will be sentenced at a later date.

Kirshenbaum was released on bail for obstruction of custody and concealment of the child’s whereabouts, but was unable to return the five-year-old child to a temporary guardian in February this year.

“Rebecca Kirschenbaum not only refused to comply with the custody agreement, but also deceived the court by not returning the child to a guardian despite the agreement,” said Deb Ryan, district attorney of Chester County. rice field. “Her lies and deception have caught up with her, and she finally faces justice. Unfortunately, a young child is suffering from her actions.”

In the spring of 2020, Phoenixville police received multiple complaints about the well-being of the defendant’s two young children. Police investigated the complaint and could not find the defendant and the child for several weeks. Defendant was arrested and charged with concealing the child’s whereabouts and obstructing custody, after learning that the investigator did not return one child to his father at the designated time, following the custody agreement. Was done. She was released on bail provided she had no unsupervised contact with the children.

After failing to appear in multiple courts, a warrant hearing was held on February 16, 2021, at which point the defendant immediately returned the 6-year-old child to a temporary guardian for unsupervised contact. I was ordered not to. child. The court gave the defendant permission to leave the child to a guardian and return it, but she did not.

Kirshenbaum and her child were unable to locate during the blizzards of February 17th and 18th. The child welfare inspector was able to contact the defendant, but refused to say where she or her child was. Investigators found the defendant and the child on February 19.

During the trial, it was presided over by Judge Jeffrey Somer.

Detectives in Chester County and Phoenixville police investigated the case. Deputy district attorney Erin O’Brien has charged the case.
