Philadelphia scored early and defeated Portland 2-0 – wake-up call

Daniel Gazdag scored in the opening round and the Philadelphia Union defeated the Portland Timbers 2-0 on Sunday night.

Sergio Santos also scored Union (6-1-6), who entered in five consecutive victories. Goalkeeper Andre Blake finished with his sixth clean sheet of the season.

“I think this gives us confidence in the future,” said Gazdag, who joined the union last year after playing in his native Hungary. “I think I played very well today, so I can build on this game.”

Timbers (3-5-6) lost two games in a row after falling 3-2 to San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday.

Union jumped forward in the 5th minute with a falling bicycle kick into the lower right corner of Gazdag. Gazdag leads Philadelphia with seven goals.

Santos scored in the header in the 48th minute to double Philadelphia’s lead. Shortly thereafter, Santos was subdued for 18-year-old Paxten Aaronson.

“Looking at the last five draws we made, there were some good draws with really good performance and some that weren’t ourselves. Tonight we thought we were back. “It was,” said union coach Jim Curtin. ..

Sebastian Blanco scored in the 69th minute, scrambled in front of the net and defeated a pair of defenders. However, a video review has determined that Santiago Moreno is offside in front of the goal.

“What distinguishes the game from team to team is that Philadelphia scored two goals and couldn’t find the net,” said Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese. “We put in a lot of work and created opportunities, but in the end, they took advantage of the moments they had.”

Timbers defender Eryk Williamson was injured in the 13th minute and had to go down. He was replaced by Moreno.

It was a setback for Williamson, who was looking to return to the US national team after recovering from the ACL breach he received last August. It was also a setback for the Timbers, who were short-lived due to a series of injuries.

Philadelphia has won their third victory in 12 games against the Timbers.
