Pew is funding six teams to drive innovative biomedical research | State

Philadelphia, September 15, 2021 / PRNewswire /-The Pew Charitable Trust today announced six groups of researchers that make up the 2021 class Innovation Fund investigators.

These Scientists — Pew Biomedical Program Graduates United States of America Latin America — Partner in interdisciplinary research to address some of the most pressing questions in human biology and illness. These researchers work to facilitate scientific discoveries and improve human health by combining expertise in subjects ranging from microbiology to genetics, immunology to developmental biology.

“The COVID-19 pandemic highlights the important role that innovative biomedical research plays in addressing global health issues,” he said. Molly Erwin, Vice President of Research and Science at The Pew Charitable Trust. “Pew is proud to be able to assist researchers in the 2021 class innovation fund. Researchers will work together to answer some of the most pressing questions in health and science.”

For over 35 years, Pew has encouraged collaboration between diverse communities of biomedical scientists and launched the Innovation Fund in 2017. The fund’s award criteria were developed to promote synergies among program graduates and motivate researchers to cooperate with new proposals. With the support of the Kathryn W. Davis Peace by Peace Foundation, all graduates with assistant professor or higher positions are eligible to apply for this award.

This year’s innovation fund team and research projects include:

Haeger Soto and Krainer investigate the mechanism by which drinking during pregnancy leads to neurodevelopmental disorders such as fetal alcohol syndrome.

Lenschow and Kardon study how chikungunya virus, a mosquito-borne pathogen that causes fever, rashes, and arthritis in humans, causes chronic and persistent symptoms even after the infection has subsided.

Murphy and Grau explore how beneficial bacteria in the gut affect age-related genes.

Sherwood and Poss investigate coordinated signaling events that occur in the body during tissue repair and regeneration.

Ugalde and Arregui investigate the role of bacterial outer membrane vesicles (spherical buds of bacterial membranes rich in enzymes and toxins) in delivering and introducing virulence factors into host cells.

Ünal and Brar investigate stress response pathways in the regulation of cellular senescence and longevity.
