Pete Alonso may rush to Home Run Derby on July 18th at Dodger Stadium as MLB leader.
Alonso won his third multi-home run game and 14th career this season with the Mets defeating the Marlins 5-3 on Saturday. His second home run in the afternoon-a 433-foot line drive to the centerfield-snapped the Thai game in eight innings, giving Amazine’s lead the lead they needed to bury the fish. This is the fourth time Alonso has defeated a home run and defeated a tie.
Seth Lugo was just off the list of fathers after welcoming his newborn son and retired from the side in eight innings with a serious shutdown inning following the explosion of Alonso’s tiebreaker. Edwin Diaz recorded his second save before the Mets stepped into the field and fell into the familiar and frequent high-five lines to celebrate his eighth win in the last 12 games.
Mets improved to 47-26 during the season and still boasts the best record in the National League. Only the 1986 (52-21) team set a better record in the first 73 games of the year.
Alonso played on Saturday, only .190 against left-handed players this season, but that average improved when Mets’ slugger hit five home runs from the southpaw this year. His solo home run from Trevor Rogers put Mets on the board in the second inning.
Mets’ first baseman won his 21st and 22nd home runs this season in the second leg of a three-game series in Miami. He led the National League with a home run and finished second in MLB with Yordan Alvarez and Mike Trout. Aaron Judge leads the league with 27 home runs. Alonso leads MLB with 69 RBIs, and no one is particularly close to taking the top ranking. Francisco Lindor also has 56 RBIs, the fourth highest in MLB, making Mets the only major team with two players to score more than 50 RBIs this season.
Amazine made another quality start in Miami when Chris Bassitt pitched more than seven innings on Saturday for the third time this season. Mets’ right-handed man worked efficiently, despite on and off traffic on the base pass, finishing seven times at 90 pitches. His ERA improved slightly to 4.01 after an ugly start from May to June. This changed the good season he was starting.
Bassitt abandoned his earned run three times with six hits and undecided five strikeouts against the Marlins. All run score damage occurred in home run pairs. Jesús Sanchez took Basit deep in the 4th inning with a 2-run ginger, and Brian de la Cruz added a solo shot in the 5th inning. Bassitt abandoned 13 home runs in the 15th start of the season as the long ball remained a thorn on his side during the Mets’ debut year.
But as long as Alonso continues the All-Star season and the Mets attack continues, the Mets will be happy to start like Saturday’s Bassitt and help advance the path to victory.
