For many years, one of the positions that was forgotten and thankfully elected was the position of a member of the school board. But over the last 18 months, the spotlight on the school board has been intense and hot.
Parents’ angry rival groups overwhelmed the school board meeting. Face-to-face learning, curriculum, cultural issues, and the conflict over mask obligations have divided the community. And the policies from Governor Tom Wolf’s administration have stimulated some of the most intense and fierce disagreements.
To overcome the anger and turmoil that surrounds our education system today, we should all ask: how do we heal the anger expressed by many parents?
To answer this, we first need to understand what caused the discord. As many believe, it wasn’t just a pandemic. Instead, it stems from government bureaucracy and union leadership that impose increasingly divided (and often unpredictable) state-wide obligations on all children, regardless of circumstances.
These politically-led orders have revealed to many parents a simple fact: they say little about what happens to their children in public schools.
Parents forced to watch their children lag behind academic, social, or both during a pandemic no longer put up with the ever-changing edict from Harrisburg.
What should we do? It’s not complicated. Parliamentarians need to give parents more decision-making power.
