A new center to celebrate and educate people about Latin America

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — There are several places reserved for celebrating and educating people about Latin America.

Now Pittsburgh has a new center for just that.

“This particular initiative is important because it is an outreach to the community to show them what Latin America is all about,” said Milagros Pereira, executive director of the Latin American Studies Association.

Although a fraction of the size of most museums, Auckland’s Latin American Cultural Center has a lot to see and do.

“Most people can spend about two hours when they go to a museum,” said Billy DeWalt, senior adviser to the Latin American Studies Association. I have more than two hours of experience in

Built in 1912, this building was once home to the Western Pennsylvania Historical Society. Later, the Latin American Studies Association acquired this space in his 2019. With the exception of a few minor tweaks, the center is almost ready to open to the public.

When you go through the door, the exhibition on the first floor begins in chronological order, inviting visitors to travel through time. All this while providing an interactive learning experience with touchscreens programmed with a variety of information about Latin America.

“We can display many images of the geography of Latin America,” says DeWalt. “We can provide people with a lot of information about the most important archaeological sites in Latin America.”

We also have a large collection of Latin American art, art history and musical instruments from collectors around the world.

“Shown here are some that I was able to borrow from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History,” says DeWalt. “There are a lot of things from my own and his wife’s collections that I’ve collected over the years in Latin America.”

The space also has an art exhibit on Mayan spirituality and an auditorium suitable for film screenings and music performances. Center officials look forward to immersing people in the history, culture and contributions of Latin America.

“Hopefully we can clear up some misconceptions with people, and hopefully inform people about some contemporary events that are happening right now,” DeWalt said.

“Latin America is a very rich and diverse culture that many people don’t know about, and I think this is a great opportunity to introduce this not just to Pittsburgh, but to the world,” Pereira said.

The center will be open from Tuesday to Thursday from September 20th. Tickets can be booked online in advance.
