Orlando Magic aspires to “fall in love” and makes the number one pick — don’t replace it – the Reading Eagle

In the case of Orlando Magic Secured # 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft You can change the trajectory of the franchise’s rebuilding.

The number one pick has historically been an all-star multiple times. And in the case of Magic, coming to Orlando as the number one pick usually preceded the Hall of Fame career (Dwight Howard, Shaquille O’Neal).

Despite the pressure and privileges associated with winning the top pick, Jeff Weltman, president of Basketball Operations, guaranteed Magic’s one-month process before the June 23 draft remained unchanged.

Orlando also has a second round pick for the 32nd and 35th drafts.

“We will do due diligence to as many prospects as possible,” Weltman said. “There is no reason not to do so. We are making a young and unique list. [and] A healthy and talented player throughout the organization. Many players will come. There is no reason to limit selectivity at this point. We want to meet all the top people, get to know them and go through the process. “

Magic continued to scout during this week’s draft combine, and Wednesday’s session included body measurements and a drill on the court.

Thursday consisted of scrims between players who were likely to be chosen in the second half of the first or second round. Friday will feature more crimmages.

“We can choose who we think is best for our team and who we think will have the greatest impact in the long run,” Weltman said. “That will bring a lot of conversations. It will be interesting to see the calls that occur. We are now familiar with the elite prospects and can add one to the team.”

One of the elite outlooks about what Magic speaks is Iowa forward Keegan Murray.

Murray said he plans to interview Orlando “in the next few days” on Thursday.

Duke’s Paolo Banchero, Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren, Purdue’s Jaden Ivey, Kentucky’s Shaedon Sharpe, and Auburn’s Jabari Smith are other players expected to be in the top of the draft.

Quintet’s Thursday media availability was canceled by the NBA for unknown reasons. These players will be able to talk to team officials this week and will begin training at the organization’s facilities after the combine is over.

“When they start the round, they feel the team will start to fall in love with the guys, which is common,” Weltman said. “The action of the lever [will] Expand from there. There are lots of interesting discussions with the team. Obviously, we don’t go into this trying to replace our picks. We are really talented, young [and] A high character man on the foundation and roster of our talent.

“This doesn’t really change the way we approach the draft. I’m really excited to fall in love with someone and choose that player.”

When asked if anyone had already come to mind with the first pick, Weltman replied that it wasn’t.

“It wasn’t too long ago, but I was able to answer that question affirmatively, but the way players participate in the league has changed dramatically over the last decade, so the resume is until you get a visitor. It’s incomplete. It embodies the rest of the process, “he said. “We enter openly. When a man comes in a year after college, and in some situations it doesn’t even happen, this rest of the process to complete the application is really important.”
