“There are more people here than I’ve been doing this for 31 years,” said Ron Marwin, Sheriff of Mead County. Rapid City Journal Saturday.
Law enforcement agencies in Sturges and Meade County report a dramatic increase in service requests over the first few days compared to the previous year.
Geody Van Dewater, police chief of Sturges, said police officers have committed 207 violations of open containers of alcohol since Friday.
The city allows open containers of beer and wine during rallies in certain downtown areas, but not liquor, but drinkers must buy a special cup.
“You can’t use cans or red cups. You must use an official souvenir cup purchased from the city and have a wristband,” says Van Dewater.
The chief said he was arrested only twice for open container breaches and the rest were verbal warnings because his patrons were uncooperative.
Police said he was arrested for drugs and traffic violations.
The sheriff’s office has responded to dozens of service requests since Friday. According to Marwin, the most frequent calls are traffic stops and accidents, which so far have nearly doubled compared to last year.
