Muhammad Ali biographer Jonathan Aig visits Fighters Haven

Fighters Haven in West Brunswick Township recently welcomed the author of Ali: A Life to a tour of the former training camp of professional boxer and heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali.

Eig was also a consulting producer for Ken Burns’ documentary Muhammad Ali, which aired on PBS in 2021.

This was Aig’s first visit to Ali’s former training camp. He spent several hours exploring the historic site.

“This place is awesome and a real gem,” Eig said in the release. “Anyone interested in ants or American history must visit this wonderful site.”

Fighters Haven offers free tours by appointment Monday through Friday and weekends from 10am to 5pm.

After garnering significant media attention when he returned to boxing in 1970, Ali built the Fighters Haven training camp while looking for a secluded place to train. The camp has his eight log cabins, a mosque, a kitchen and a gym for support personnel, where he did a lot of his training. Battles such as Rumble in the Jungle in 1974 and Thrilla in Manila in 1975.

After retiring from the ring, Ali sold the camp in 1997 to George Dillman of Kumul Township, who ran Butterfly & Bee Bed & Breakfast.

Following Ali’s death on June 3, 2016, Fighter’s Haven was opened to the public, including the gym, kitchen, and cabin. Since July 2016, the site has been owned by Mike Madden, son of legendary football Hall of Famer and his coach, the late John Madden.

When Madden learned that Ali’s former training camp was for sale, buying Fighter’s Haven was a call to let the public know about Ali’s life. Madden continues to open the camp to the public.

“The story of Muhammad Ali is so important to American history and sports history,” Madden said. “The lessons we can learn from the life of Muhammad Ali are as important today as they were then.”

In October, Fighters Haven will install a historic marker for the Pennsylvania Historical Museums Commission.
