Yuvalde, Texas (AP) — An 18-year-old gunner fired at an elementary school in Texas on Tuesday, killing at least 18 children as he moved from classroom to classroom, officials said. The string of the slaughter. The attacker was killed by law enforcement.

According to Senator Roland Gutierrez, the death toll included three adults and was explained by state police. However, it was not immediately clear whether the numbers included attackers or injured.

Almost 10 years ago, the slaughter at Rob Elementary School in the Latin town of Yuvarde has been at an elementary school in the United States since shooters killed 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in New Town, Connecticut. It was the worst shooting of.

“Today, my heart is broken,” said school district director Hal Harrell, who announced that all school activities had been canceled until further notice. “We are a small community. We need your prayers to overcome this.”

The attack also took place just 10 days after a racist rampage in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and participated in many years of mass murder in churches, schools and stores. And the outlook for national gun control reforms seemed as dim as the aftermath of Sandy Hook’s death.

President Joe Biden appeared ready for the fight, demanding new gun restrictions in a speech to the country hours after the attack.

“As a nation, we must ask when we will confront the gun lobby in the name of God. In the name of God, are we going to do what we have to do?” Biden asked. .. “Why are you willing to live with this genocide?”

Many of the injured were taken to the Yuvarde Memorial Hospital, where they could see scrub staff and relatives of the devastated victims crying as they left the complex.

The shooter, wearing a bulletproof vest, crashed a car out of the school and then went inside. Eric Estrada of the Texas Department of Public Safety told CNN.

According to Gutierrez, he killed his grandmother before going to school with two military rifles he bought on his birthday.

“That was the first thing he did on his 18th birthday,” he said.

Authorities did not immediately reveal their motives, but the governor identified the perpetrator as Salvador Ramos, who said he was a resident of a community about 85 miles (135 kilometers) west of San Antonio.

Ramos had hinted that an attack could come on social media, Gutierrez said, “he suggested that children should be careful.”

According to law enforcement officers, border guards working nearby when the shooting began rushed to school without waiting for a backup and shot dead the shooter behind the barricade. I will talk about it.

According to law enforcement sources, the agent was injured but was able to leave school.

Pete Aledondo, the school district’s police chief, said the attacker acted alone.

The number of injured was not immediately known, but Arredondo said there were “several injured.” Earlier, the Uvalde Memorial Hospital stated that 13 children were taken there. Another hospital reported that a 66-year-old woman was in a serious condition.

With just under 600 students at Robb Elementary School, Arredondo states that it serves second, third and fourth grade students. He did not provide the age of the children shot. This was the last week of school before summer vacation.

Heavy-armed law enforcement officers flocked to the school, the best tactical police officers diverted traffic, and FBI agents entered and exited the building.

White House spokesman Karine Jean-Pierre said she was briefed on the shooting at Air Force One when Biden returned from a five-day trip to Asia.

With about 16,000 inhabitants, Yuvarde is about 75 miles (120 km) from the Mexican border. Rob Elementary has most of the understated homes in a residential area.

The tragedy in Yuvalde was the deadliest school shooting in Texas history and was added to the rigorous tally in the states that had the deadliest shootings in the United States in the last five years.

In 2018, 10 gunmen were shot dead at Santa Fe High School in the Houston area. A year earlier, a Texas church shooter killed more than 20 people during a Sunday service in a small town in Sutherland Springs. In 2019, another Wal-Mart shooter in El Paso killed 23 people in a racist attack.

The shooting took place a few days before the National Rifle Association’s annual convention was set to begin in Houston. Both Abbott and the US Senator in Texas were among the elected Republican officials who were scheduled speakers at the Friday Leadership Forum sponsored by the NRA’s Lobbying Division.

In the years since Sandy Hook, the debate on gun control in Congress has declined. Parliamentary efforts to change US gun policy in a significant way have consistently faced obstacles from Republicans and the influence of external groups such as the NRA.

A year after Sandy Hook, West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin and Pennsylvania Republican Patrick J. Adams negotiated a bipartisan proposal to expand the country’s background check system. However, it became clear that the bill was about to be brought to the Senate for voting and could not get enough votes to clear the 60-vote filibuster hurdle.

After the shooting in Newtown, then President Barack Obama, who put gun control at the center of the administration’s goals, called the failure of Congress’s actions “a pretty shameful day for Washington.”

Last year, House passed two bills to expand background checks on firearm purchases. One bill would have closed the loopholes in personal and online sales. The other was to extend the review period for background checks. Both declined in the 50-50 Senate. There, Democrats need at least 10 Republican votes to overcome opposition from filibuster.
