Teens can be restless in the summer. Especially if the pandemic has left many people at home during this past school year. There are so many video games you can play, shows you can stream, and TikTok videos you can consume before you start getting bored. Here is Mattress Factory Free Teen Summer Workshop Come in and provide young minds with eclectic outlets to learn new skills and bend their creative muscles.
Starting July 20th (Tuesday), the Northside Museum will hold six one-day workshops for second-year, third-year, and fourth-year high school students. The workshops are taught by selected artists representing a wide range of interests, from music and botanical illustrations to culinary arts.
Mattress Factory’s teen program coordinator, Matty Cannon, said that the museum’s “teaching mantra” when choosing a workshop is “diversity (creative practice), diversity (background), diversity (how people do). He said he could be involved, that is, face-to-face or virtual). ”
“We posted a public offering to artists who are excited to share aspects of their practice with teens through Mattress Factory,” says Cannon.
Among the options are the opportunity to create your own cigar box guitar, create your own instrument with Erie-based musician Matthew Borkzon, and with multimedia artist Monica Quinn, who specializes in flower murals. I may draw an illustration. Teens can also explore cooking with Simon Chough, chef and founder of Garfield Restaurant Soju, and learn how to combine social justice with making between activism and tie-dye.
There are also lessons on how to hold pouch concerts and sound art and podcast workshops by Bunker Projects’ current artist-in-residence Zoe Scruggs and Lou Tandon.
According to Cannon, the program will also include two summer fellows, Chloe Miller and Sophia Katres, who graduated from Mattress Factory’s teenage program The Teen Art Cooperative in 2020.
“They have returned to work with the museum to help us organize a great summer workshop series,” Cannon said, adding that the fellows were involved in the selection process.
The Mattress Factory Teen Summer Workshop will be held from July 20th to August 21st. Participants in each workshop are limited to 15 people.Register for free at mattress.org/programs/teen-summer-workshop-series
