A West Virginia man was sentenced to three years in federal prison on Thursday for speaking out about the coronavirus and efforts to stop its spread after sending threatening emails to Dr. Anthony Fauci and another federal health official. It was handed down.
Thomas Patrick Connolly Jr. used an anonymous Swiss-based email account to threaten to kill Fauci or members of his family, according to a US Department of Justice news release. said they would be “dragged into the streets, beaten to death and set on fire.”
Another email said Fauci would be “hunted, captured, tortured and killed,” according to court records.
Fauci is President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Fauci has been a vocal advocate for vaccines and other preventive measures against COVID-19. He said he plans to retire at the end of Biden’s current term.
Another target was Dr. Francis Collins, director of the NIH at the time of Connolly’s threat. The Justice Department said Collins and his family were threatened with physical assault and death if he continued to talk about the need for a “compulsory” COVID-19 vaccination.
Connolly also admitted to sending threatening emails to then-Pennsylvania Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine, the Department of Justice said. Religious leaders were also threatened.
“Everyone has the right to disagree, but you have no right to threaten the life of a federal employee,” Maryland U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron said in a statement.
U.S. District Judge Paula Siennis sentenced Connolly to 37 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Connolly recently lived in Snowshoe, West Virginia.
He was arrested last summer and pleaded guilty to threatening federal officials in May.
