Little League: Pittston Area loses to Calne Township in Eastern Regional Title Game

Light TWP. — The Pittston area had an offensive explosion in a weeklong tournament that earned him two cracks in the Little League 8-10 Softball Eastern Regional title.

No one turned up for Saturday morning’s first game against reigning Pennsylvania champions Cullen Township. No one was there for Saturday afternoon’s rematch either.

Instead, Calne Township shut out the Pittton area twice, 2-0 and 3-0, to win the regional championship in the Mountain Top Little League.

Caln went on a five-game winning streak after losing the second game of a double-elimination tournament. This includes his four wins in the last two days. The Eastern Regional Title is Little League Softball’s crowning achievement at this level, with no World Series for this age group.

Bryan Seibert, manager of Culln, who graduated from Wyoming in 1993, said: “They never wavered. They never missed an out, an inning or an at-bat. If they played all season, they had chances.”

The Piston area, which received automatic bids to the region as host district champions, managed just four hits in two games against Karun pitcher Kaley Sabert, who struck out 19 in 12 innings.

“Today was tough,” said Piston Area Manager Bill Croski. “She pitched 12 innings with a lot of strikes. It’s a win. We played a clean game. We won the first game 2-1, but we had too many runners. It happens, but she threw a great game.So did our girls. It couldn’t be better. The girls should be proud.”

Karun had only one hit in the first game against Eva Thomas in the Piston area, but the bases were loaded on the second walk and an error on Seibert’s single in the fourth caused two runs.

The Piston area’s best chances in the season opener came when Thomas and Daniel Buzak walked in the second inning to give the team first and second with two outs. Isabella Kuroski recorded both hits in Pittstone’s area in which he hit once and his fifth infield hit.

The Piston area did not hit the ball out of the infield in the first game. The offense couldn’t pick itself up in the second game. Kuroski and Natalie McAndrew hit back-to-back one-out singles in the third inning, but Seibert allowed two baserunners for the rest of the game: Sophia Laudato on his fourth and Liv Distasio on his sixth. I walked first. Both girls were stuck in 3rd place.

Karun took a 2–0 lead in the third on Macy Atkinson’s RBI single and Gia Belphy’s groundout. Megan Scherrer scored another run out of four. She singled, was bunted to second by Maddy McIntyre, and used two errors to score.

“We should all be proud and delighted with the support we have received from our parents, the community, and others in the district,” Kuroski said.
