Quarterback Eric Nickel made two touchdowns on Saturday to beat 25th-placed Kutztown to 20-3 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Football’s visit to Shippensburg.
With the victory, only the Golden Bears (4-0, 6-1) will outperform PSAC East.
Nickel struggled to move through Kutztown and completed 6 out of 18 passes at 80 yards. However, Kutztown won 234 yards above the ground, led by Jeremiah Nelson, who is 85 yards in nine carries.
Kutztown’s defense limited Shippensburg (2-2, 5-2) to 19 yards above ground and fired Red Raiders quarterback Brysen Mussina seven times.
Jackson Montros gave Shippensburg a 3-0 lead, leaving 9:34 in the first quarter with a 34-yard field goal.
Kutztown took a 6-3 lead in a one-yard Jordan Davis TD run in the second play of the second quarter.
Nickel scored a one-yard run with 4:20 remaining in the second quarter, giving Kutztown a 13-6 half-time lead.
In the third quarter, Nickel scored with a three-yard run remaining at 8:09.
That was more than the Golden Bears defense needed. Katztown held Shippensburg down to the first nine downs, intercepted one of Mussina’s passes, and forced him to punt eight times.
Shippensburg was 5-18 on a third-down conversion and 0-3 on a force-down attempt.
