Joe Schoen traded back twice in the second round on Friday night, consistent with the NFL Draft Giants total for the last 14 years.
Shane traded back with Jet and the Falcons, sliding from 36th to 43rd, winning four more (114) and fifth (146) round picks in the process.
Then, at the age of 43, Shane chose Kentucky wide receiver Wandale Robinson, a 5-8, 178-pound gadget player, a slot receiver, and a returnman who played a running back.
This is an interesting addition given that the Giants have recently called other teams considering dealing with wide receiver Kadarius Toney.
Will Robinson replace him or will he play with Tony, who reported to the Giants’ off-season program?
Shane was asked the question. GM said: Take as many such people as possible to the field. “
As Daily News reported last week, Shane became bristle when asked if he would close the door trying to deal with Tony.
“We are not shopping for Kadarius Tony,” Shane said.
GM was then asked: So are you not going to replace him?
“Look back at what I just said,” GM said without closing the door to Tony’s deal.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the Giants traded too far from other priority players.
The Minnesota Vikings jumped over the corner while Shane was waiting on the pick 43-the Niedy Giants jumped to 42 with Colts and chose the Clemson Corner Andrew Booth Jr.
The Giants drafted Robinson higher than was rated by Pro Football Focus (4th round) and Athletic (3rd or 4th round).
One scout told the news that Robinson was “fast” but he thought he was more of a “third day man.” According to The Athletic, Robinson has more career drops (11) than he receives a touchdown (10).
21-year-old Robinson has the theme of speed of attack by Shane and new director Brian Dabol, including the signature of Matt Breida’s running back free agent and the signature of receiver / returnman Richey James Jr. I’m continuing.
Even if Shane arrives, at least he picked up some extra draft topics while doing it.
The Giants franchise did not make a single tradeback in the NFL Draft from 2007 to 2020.
Former GM Dave Gettleman had never traded back in eight drafts of the Panthers and Giants, but finally traded back in the first and second rounds of last year.
Shane’s two trades pushed the Giants’ 2022 draft topic total from 9 to 11 for reconstruction.
Schoen first exchanged pick 36 for Jets 38 and 146 in the fifth round. This will allow the Giants to win consecutive picks in rounds 146 and 147.
He then traded back from 38 to 43 and won a pick 114 from Atlanta in the fourth round.
In the first face-to-face week after appearing on Monday, Dabol announced in the Giants’ voluntary off-season program that “Kadarius had a good week.”
“I jumped in right away and ran with them,” said the coach.
It remains to be seen what business Shane is doing this offseason and whether Tony will influence their future trade plans.
