Baghdad (AP) — According to the Syrian Democratic Forces, US-backed Syrian fighters and US troops have thwarted drone attacks on bases containing members of the US-led coalition in eastern Syria. In nearby Iraq, a rocket struck a base containing US troops, injuring three people.

A US-led coalition colonel, Wayne Malott, spokesman said that at around 12:30 pm, the Al-Assard Air Force Base in western Iraq was attacked by 14 rockets that landed in and around the base. “At this point, the first report shows three minor injuries. The damage is under evaluation,” he said, saying that force protection defenses had been invoked. “

Tensions are rising between US troops and Iran-backed fighters after a US air strike in eastern Syria killed six Iraqi fighters in the area along the Syrian-Iraqi border at the end of last month.

The attack on Wednesday occurred around 10:15 am, and the Self-Defense Forces added, “Early reports confirm that the attack failed and did not cause any damage.”

According to the Self-Defense Forces and Syrian opposition activists, the Al-Omar base was attacked by two rockets over the weekend, but did not cause any casualties. US troops denied the attack on Sunday.

Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said the drone had taken off from an area dominated by Iran-backed fighters in the eastern Syrian town of Maya Dean. He added that the drone was shot down.

Drone strikes on US-led coalitions in Syria were almost uncommon.

Hundreds of US troops are stationed in northeastern Syria and are working with the Self-Defense Forces to fight Islamic State groups.

The United States has accused Iran-backed militias of attacks targeting US presence at military bases throughout Baghdad and Iraq, most of which are rocket strikes. These days, attacks have become more sophisticated, with radicals using drones.

Late Tuesday, Kurdish-run regional counter-terrorism forces in northern Iraq reported a drone strike on nearby Erbil airport, where US troops are based. According to a statement by the counter-terrorism unit, the missile fell into the field and fired, but was not damaged by the attack.
