How to Fix Wi-Fi Problems on MacBook Pro?

Can’t get online because your MacBook Pro won’t connect to the Wi-Fi? While smartphones are equipped with wireless data capabilities, MacBooks aren’t. So, Wi-Fi issues shouldn’t be taken lightly as they can make you want to throw your hands up in the air in frustration.

The good news is you can do a few things to fix Wi-Fi problems on your MacBook Pro. Let’s get started.

  1. Run Apple’s Wireless Diagnostics 

MacBook Pro comes with a built-in wireless diagnostic tool to check the wireless network. Hold down the Option key or Alt key to run this tool and select the Wi-Fi icon. After that, choose the Open Wireless Diagnostics option and click Continue. You may have to enter your login password and then wait for the diagnostics to complete.

After completing it, head to the summary and select the blue “i” button to learn more. Check if the notes include any important failure or error that you should keep in mind when solving Wi-Fi issues.

If there are any major problems identified, Wireless Diagnostics will give you solutions.

  1. Forget the Network

Forgetting a network is helpful when you’re facing trouble connecting to Wi-Fi. After forgetting the network, you can reconnect to the same network. However, this time, you’ll be prompted to type your credentials again. So, it is important to remember your password before forgetting the network. If you have forgotten your Wi-Fi password, you will have to get it from Mac. Luckily, you don’t have to wonder too long how to view Wi-Fi password on Mac because you can quickly get your password using Terminal and Keychain. You can even do a quick password reset.

Assuming you remember your Wi-Fi password, proceed to forget the network by clicking the Wi-Fi symbol > selecting Open Network Preferences > choosing Advanced > clicking the “-” button to forget a network and click OK.

Once you have forgotten a network, your Mac and other devices using iCloud Keychain will not join the network.

Then, try reconnecting to the network again by adding the password when requested.

  1. Restart your router 

Is your Wi-Fi acting poorly for your Mac and other devices? That’s a good sign as it means the network is at fault. You can start by physically inspecting the router to see if anything is wrong. Carry out a physical inspection of the cables to ensure the connections are secure and make changes if needed. Then, restart your router to see if the problem is fixed.

Restarting or resetting your router can fix several problems, including issues with your router updates, lost connections with hard-line Internet, and dropped connections. Before you begin, remember to unplug your router from the modem. Also, wait for some time before switching the router back on.

  1. Update macOS

Did you update macOS recently? At times, new updates may interfere with your Wi-Fi and cause connection issues. In such cases, you need to roll back the update and wait. Then, wait for a day or two before updating your system safely because Wi-Fi problems in updates are patched quickly.

On the other hand, an update can also fix problems that you might be having with your Wi-Fi. So, if you haven’t updated your MacBook Pro in a while, check your system for any updates. Implement the updates and see if Mac recommends updating any router devices.

  1. Check TCP/IP settings 

The Network section of System Preferences can solve TCP/IP issues. Open it up by going to System Preferences > click Network > select Advanced > click TCP/IP tab. If you cannot see your IPv4 address or something is unusual, click Renew DHCP Lease and reset your network connections.

With modern network systems, there is rarely ever an issue. But if resetting your network does not fix the problem, connect with your network administrator. You can also check with your local ISP or Internet service provider to sort through the DNS and TCP/IP tabs settings. MacBook Pro users may sometimes experience Wi-Fi issues due to heavy Wi-Fi usage in the area or high network overall usage. In such a situation, changing the Wi-Fi channels can do wonders. You can change the Wi-Fi router channels to the 5-GHz band and for doing that, follow these steps:

  • Take your Wi-Fi router and make a note of the default IP address
  • Open your web browser and enter the IP address in the search bar
  • Log in to the settings of your Wi-Fi router
  • Search for the 802.11 bands and change them to the 5-GHz band
  • Save the changes and try reconnecting your Mac to the Wi-Fi
