Green Day Ax Moscow Gig in the Midst of Russia-Ukraine Invasion | Music

Green Day canceled a concert in Moscow as Russia invaded Ukraine.

Rockers of the “American Idiot” were planning to bring the “Heramega Tour” to the Russian capital Spartak Stadium on May 29, but the band canceled the show in light of President Vladimir Putin’s attack on Ukraine. ..

Billie Joe Armstrong and colleagues said in a statement:

“We realize that this moment isn’t a rock show in the stadium, it’s much bigger than that, but we’re confident that rock and roll is eternal and we have time and place to return in the future. .Take care.”

The “basket case” group pulling their gigs will come after Russia has been banned from this year’s “Eurovision Song Contest”.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which hosts the event, has announced a decision to ban Russia from the show, saying it could unpopularize the competition “in the light of an unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”.

In a statement, EBU said: “This decision reflects concerns that the inclusion of Russian entries in this year’s contest will make competition unpopular in the light of an unprecedented crisis in Ukraine.

“Before making this decision, the EBU took time to consult widely among its members.

“EBU is a non-political member organization of broadcasters that promises to maintain the value of public services.”

The organization explained that it has decided to protect the “value” of the upcoming event in Turin, Italy in May.

The statement explains: “We are dedicated to promoting international exchange and understanding, attracting audiences, celebrating diversity through music and preserving the value of cultural competition that integrates Europe into one stage.”

The EBU initially claimed that the country could continue to compete in Eurovision.

The organizers explained that they are “currently planning” to accept participants from both Russia and Ukraine.

A statement at the time said, “Of course, we will continue to monitor the situation carefully.”

However, Ukraine’s national broadcaster UA: PBC has called for Russia to be suspended from the event that Italy’s Måneskin won in 2021.

Broadcasters described their Russian counterpart as “a mouthpiece for the Kremlin and an important tool for political propaganda.”

UA: PBC also described this situation as “contrary to EBU’s values.”
