Pennsylvania (WTAJ) – Governor Tom Wolfe joined state and local leaders today in highlighting the $2.5 million Redevelopment Support Capital Program (RACP) grant awarded to the William Way LGBT Community Center.
The grant will be used for Phase 2 of the Center’s major renovation project.
Funds awarded last fall will be used to upgrade and renovate the rear two-thirds of the dilapidated building.
“The William Way LGBT Community Center is an anchor for the Philadelphia community, serving more than 15,000 unique visitors from all backgrounds and professions each year,” said Gov. During his visit, the governor toured the existing center and saw first-hand key elements of the renovation plan, including:
• Improved ADA access to existing buildings.
Dismantling and replacement of the rear wing
• Create highly flexible spaces and new restroom/assistance facilities
• New fire stair/elevator core
• Pillar-free event space for 300 people
• Catering kitchen and cafe for job creation and training
• Meeting facilities available for rent
• Flexible, private and spacious coworking area
• New dedicated art gallery
• Computer lounge suitable for hybrid programs
The center previously received its first $1 million RACP grant in 2019 to complete renovations and HVAC upgrades to the front third of the building.
The center offers a number of free programs to residents, including senior services, peer counseling, holiday dining, art galleries, activity clubs, and other recreational, health, fitness, employment, and educational opportunities.
But now, leaky roofs, wet basements, outdated building systems, and disorganized layouts severely limit the center’s ability to operate efficiently and attract new entrants to the building.
