“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” Earns $ 44 Million in Theater | Nationwide

Defeating ghosts is still a very lucrative business, nearly 40 years later.

The latest attempts to revive “Ghostbusters” for Thanksgiving weekend have attracted a significant number of spectators to the theater, but like most dramas of the pandemic era, the beloved “King Richard” I’m having a hard time.

With awe of nostalgia and some famous cameos in its arsenal, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is an industry quote for $ 44 million in ticket sales from 4,315 locations, according to a studio quote on Sunday. It exceeded my expectations. Sony movies are shown exclusively in theaters.

The first weekend of “Next World” follows Paul Feig’s “Ghostbusters” weekend by Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, who opened $ 46 million in June 2016. Except for the somewhat unpredictable habit of watching movies in the pandemic era, the decisive difference is that the cost of creating an “afterlife” is about half.

Other high-profile products on the weekend didn’t work either. The well-reviewed drama King Richard, starring Will Smith as the father of tennis giants Venus and Serena Williams, earned $ 5.7 million from 3,302 locations, losing almost half of its modest expectations. I did. The Warner Bros. Pictures movie was released simultaneously at HBO Max and the theater.

The traditional blockbuster succeeded in attracting a decent audience, but the drama struggled disproportionately during the pandemic. Most debuted in the $ 3 million range. One of the more successful launches was Aretha Franklin’s biography “Respect,” which opened for $ 8.8 million.

Meanwhile, in a limited release from A24, Mike Mills’ C’mon C’mon was one of the best limited platform debuts since February 2020, costing $ 134,447 from five screens. The film starring Joaquin Phoenix as a man caring for his 9-year-old nephew.
